Marlon: You're the host of the #1 Gospel morning show across the country, the show is awesome; how long have you been in radio?
KD: I was 17 or 18 years old when I got into radio so that makes almost 20 years this year.
Marlon: When did you realize that you wanted to do radio and did you also know you had this voice?
KD: When I was a country boy in college and the girls would stop me and want to talk to me and I didn't understand why. I had to go to the on campus radio station about something and they handed me an application to work. The person who gave me the application found out where my classes were and followed up with me and that's where it all started.
Marlon: So college radio is where it all started and you were raised in the church, so when did you realize this was also your ministry?
KD: I have always been ministry minded pertaining to my radio show. I have never done live secular radio as I have always been passionate about gospel. I knew that with that type of music, came a certain lifestyle so I was not interested in secular radio.
Marlon: So I hear you are a minister in your church.
KD: I am a minister at Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
Marlon: You have a nationally syndicated radio show, KD Bowe Morning Show, talk to me about your time there and the transition from afternoons to mornings.
KD: We actually started the radio station on April 1st and I did all aspects of the show, jingles ,imaging, music selection etc . After awhile I left to pursue my own company for about 5 years and then I came back and took the open slot for mornings where I was previously the Program Director and I did afternoons. I never knew I had a morning voice because it is so deep but I always loved working with people and I think they are interesting. I can go to the mall and sit down and watch people for hours.
Marlon: So you have done Program Director, Music Director and production and you even had a powerful single out called Reign. Are you going to pursue that and come out with an album?
KD: I don't consider myself a singer, but I had done that single with Lamar Campbell and some others. I like to sing and wouldn't mind doing an album, but I don't call myself a singer: I prefer to just be a dad.
Marlon: I'm glad you have that focus because sometimes when people find out that you can do more, they will run you all over the place. And you do your own jingles on the show and they do so good that you don't have to find someone else to do it!
KD: Singing is fun for me to do, and the anointing makes preaching and singing easier to do so I thank God for that.
Marlon: Who would you say was your best interview?
KD: I had an off the air interview with Bishop TD Jakes one time while visiting another radio station. I was sitting next to me and so I took the time to talk to him and he dropped such jewels on me that I carry with me to this day.
Marlon: A lot of Gospel Artists are starting to take the worlds flavor, do you have a standard as far as what you will play on your show?
KD: To me, I believe it is really about what my listeners want, you cannot think or listen for them and decide what they like. Who I was at 26 is not who I am at 36 and people like what I like and don't like what they don't like. As long as it is not contrary to the word of God and the listeners like it then I will play it. Inspiration, motivation and encouragement comes in all different forms; even if I don't care for it. To me it should be about the life, death, burial and resurrection of Christ, but I let people be people and I leave the judging up to God.
Marlon: That's an excellent view and I am going to take some of that wisdom with me, thank you. What is your favorite song that is out right now?
KD: Back to Eden by Donald Lawrence is my favorite at this point.
Marlon: As you said you are getting a little older and wiser, so do you travel a lot right now?
KD: Most of the time when I travel I try to pack everything in one trip. If I have to make an appearance somewhere I try to incorporate business, ministry and entertainment while I am there. Regardless of how much of a talent we have, God does require some return on the investments so I try to exercise all my gifts when I can. But when I am home with my family I give them all my time and I make a point to turn my phone off and be with just them.
Marlon: Let's talk about what you are doing for the WORD Network.
KD: I am the signature voice for the WORD Network and some of the clients such as Prophetess Juanita Bynum, Bishop Jakes, Bishop Paul Morton and some of the others.
Marlon: Of all you do, what would you say is your favorite thing to be a part of?
KD: It's actually not my business that is my favorite, but it is seeing my thumb print on my children. I love to see them happy, smiling, and progressively growing. I have chosen to make them my priority: They are 4, 5 and 6 and I try to just be the best dad possible to them.
Marlon: Well thank you so much for your time and thank you for being an example to people like me who are coming up behind you. I appreciate your excellence to Christ, gospel music and the whole music industry.
